sub•a•quat•ic (2006) installation
submersible
artists
music and images : Milliseconde Topographie [Bernier+Measroch]
description / program note sub•a•quat•ic is a sound installation proposing a special
type of experience : the underwater listening. Submerged in water, it’s
the entire body which perceives the music, the sound seeming as if coming directly
from inside the skull. The aquatic world also perturbs and blurs the music. What
the listener perceives becomes a difformed reality which can seem strangely faint
and distant, as would do memories.
sub•a•quat•ic is a work on the dichotomy between two
spaces, the inner and the outer world. Milliseconde Topographie has conceived
two music works to inhabit each world and interact with each other. The subaquatic
soundscape is built around slowness and melodies with the sounds of music boxes,
toys and old cameras, objects reminiscent of the past and of the intimacy of lullabies.
Above the water surface, the external soudscape, with its realistic aesthetic,
appears more like the reflection of the concrete world.
The listener-swimmer choses its own journey, hovering at the surface where both
spaces merge, or dives in one world to then re-emerge in the other.
