 Writing Machine (2005) 18'

artists:
music: Nicolas Bernier
voice: André Garant

description / program note
Writing Machine is an 8 channel electroacoustic piece intended to be played on loudspeaders orchestra. The piece is inspired by the American writer William S. Burroughs and by some relationships I have found between his work and electroacoustic music. I was inspired by his “cut-up” technique which consists of taking several text sources, cutting some parts of text, and pasting them in random order until it gives the desired effect. I applied his technique to his own words, cutting them and reconstructing new word structures. patterns of alternation at specific intervals.

Writing Machine was comissionned by Zentrum Für Kunst Und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe (Germany) and made possible with the financial support of Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canadian Embassy in Berlin.

Thanks to André Garant for landing me his voice.
